How Does This Work Securely?
Typing your password into a website to check if it's secure usually defeats the purpose of keeping it secret. That's why we use a privacy-preserving model called k-Anonymity.
The k-Anonymity Process
- When you type your password, your browser instantly converts it into a mathematically irreversible 40-character SHA-1 hash.
- We take only the first 5 characters of that hash and send it to the Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) database.
- The HIBP server responds with a list of all compromised password hashes that share those same 5 starting characters (usually hundreds of them).
- Your browser then locally scans that list to see if the rest of your hash is in there.
Because the database server never receives your actual password or even the full hash, it has zero knowledge of what your password actually is. It's mathematically impossible for us or anyone else to intercept or steal the password you are testing.
Why Checking for Breaches Matters
Even if you use a long, incredibly complex password with a perfect mathematical entropy score, it is entirely useless if it has been exposed in a data breach. When websites are hacked, databases of user emails and passwords are often dumped onto the dark web. Hackers compile these into massive "credential stuffing" lists and use automated software to try those passwords across thousands of other sites like banks, Amazon, and Netflix.
