Most online virus scanners require you to physically upload your sensitive documents, PDFs, or executables to their servers. This is a massive privacy risk. Our engine operates on a "Zero-Upload" principle.
When you drop a file into our scanner, your web browser's native cryptography engine instantly calculates a mathematical "hash" (SHA-256 fingerprint) of the file. This hash is just a short string of text that uniquely identifies the file, without containing any of the file's actual data. Your file never leaves your computer.
Once your browser generates the file's fingerprint, we send that tiny text string to the VirusTotal API. VirusTotal cross-references the hash against more than 70 industry-leading antivirus engines, including Bitdefender, Malwarebytes, Kaspersky, and McAfee. If any of those engines have flagged that specific file as malicious in the past, you will get an instant alert.
